After noticing more and more Raptor owners having issues with CV boots tearing we began looking into the issue. The stock boots are made of a very stiff plastic.
Under severe off-road conditions or setting the truck at the top perch, these boots will eventually fail and tear. We have a solution by replacing the hard plastic cv boot with a durable, flexible neoprene cv boot. This material is much more durable than the stock components and is usually found in high end off road race applications.

I knew the IWE system is kind of goofy and didn't think much of it Thought I had just toasted an IWE.
The one coming off looked fine and both the locking hub side gears and CV axle gear looked completely fine with no broken teeth or wear. Vacuum is holding a solid 25psi when the system is not engaged and has no leaks.
The sound is still there and getting worse, much worse when turning left. I have a few paths to take here but wanted to see if anyone had similar problems before I buy all these parts and just replace everything. My thought process next: pull front diff cover and check fluid, check passenger side IWE, check diff bushings, replace front u joint, replace CV half shafts.
Feb 23, at AM 2. It sounds like what so many others have described when the IWE's break. If it were me I would have a ford tech look at it and go from there. It never hurts to have a fresh set of eyes and ears evaluate the problem and could save you time and money in the long run. Feb 23, at AM 3. Half shafts, joints are bad. With truck running in 2 wheel drive so hubs are freecrawl under truck, pull push wiggle half shafts for play.
Last, you can lift wheels off ground, front shocks and suspension at full droop, try again. Nothing should bind. Feb 23, at AM 4. Yeah, did that yesterday. The driver's side half shaft would bind a tiny bit but had zero play. Did have a torn boot that I didn't see all winter so I am guessing some gravel and crap got in the outboard joint. So after an afternoon spent under my truck, I have more questions than answers. I jacked up the front end again and have zero binding of either CV joint.
So I thought it might be my drive chain in the transfer case, locked up the transfer case and had zero play in the front drive line.

RCV Front Axles
It will pop right back in. There is a retainer snap ring you don't want to mangle or break. If its completely apart, make sure the snap ring is ok and use a small screw driver to start it in correctly.
Once its started a blow with a soft hammer or hammer with piece of wood will pop it right back in. The snap ring will hold it together unless you pry or hammer apart again.

That one of the boots on the left front axles is coming a part. Looks like dry rot. Either way it will need replacing and Ford is telling me that the entire axle will need to be replaced. I think 6 or 8 bolts on the inner flange and the nut in the hub. YouTube it. Should be the same procedure as an f Just a bigger shaft. CV boots can be replaced and new grease packed within, but if it has run dry or gotten a lot of dirt inside the joint, better to replace the whole shebang. BenBB likes this.
